Google contacted me to say I should test my Internet bandwidth while on LTE. Too bad they killed making and receiving calls in Hangouts because that worked perfectly all the time. It’s actually Google’s app that is unstable. By saying your “Internet Connection is unstable” Google is just making up an excuse for their app being broken. ![]() Thanks to Casey Liss and Merlin Mann for both extolling the virtues of Plex over the past few months. A few hours of work and a few bucks on software well spent. Combining these few little tricks with Otomatic - which can download files from RSS feeds - and I’ve been able to automate a whole bunch of tasks that I used to babysit and manually hover over just to make sure everything got where it needed and had the proper metadata added. Those folders, of course, are the Plex Library folders - so once the file gets added to Plex it gets categorized, has subtitles, descriptions, and artwork added, and becomes perfectly organized and ready to watch. Hazel watches that folder for new files and pulls out just the media file, deletes the rest of the crap, and uses a few rules to find out if it’s a movie or TV show before moving it to the correct folder. I can toss a torrent file into that folder from anywhere (by just downloading it from my desktop or using a Workflow on iOS) and Hazel will see it, open it in Transmission, and then download whatever it is into a staging folder. With Dropbox I can put files into a “receiving” folder which Hazel watches on the server. ![]() Then, using a combination of Dropbox, Otomatic, Transmission, and Hazel, I was able to automate adding media into Plex. The apps let you watch your media from anywhere with an internet connection and with the Plex Pass service you can easily sync to an iPhone or iPad for offline viewing. So, the server works, the web interface isn’t bad, the Apple TV app itself is great, and the iOS apps are impressive as well. This means I can easily add more storage later through external drives. Setting up the server software is easy and I love the idea of being able to point it at specific folders full of movies, TV shows, and home videos. This way I could run the entire thing headless in the closet and set it up for one purpose only: serving Plex. I had an older Mac Mini that I repurposed as my new media server. Not only is the native Apple TV app one of the better apps I’ve seen on the device, it, like Apple Music, is only going to get better (Siri search, universal search, etc.). So, after hearing basically everyone gush about Plex over the past few weeks, and reading the reviews about the new native app for the new Apple TV (which I really love), I decided it was worth giving it another look. However, recently I felt like I was spending more time managing and organizing the files while troubleshooting weird network issues (like stuff not showing up if the computer had been asleep too long). I used iFlicks 2 for adding metadata to any extra media I had in my collection, and, all-in-all it worked pretty well. Instead, for the past few years, I’ve been using the old Apple TV with Home Sharing through iTunes. I liked the basic idea but this was before the wave of little pucks attached to TVs really took off and it was cumbersome to get it to work right. I had tried Plex about six or so years ago and it didn’t seem for me. And with Apple TV’s new top shelf, you can see your featured Plex content right on your Apple TV home screen. Now, finding what you want is easier and more simple than ever before. ![]() The new Apple TV interface, married with our own design touches, gives you the slickest navigation and search experience yet, showcasing all of your media in an elegant and intuitively organized way. DeskConnect doesn’t rely on finicky Bluetooth connectivity, it just needs an Internet connection. When AirDrop works properly, it’s great, but if my Twitter timeline suggests anything, it’s that AirDrop doesn’t always work like it should. Why would you choose to use DeskConnect over something like AirDrop? Isn’t this why AirDrop was created? You’ll find the four shortcuts for sending the mentioned files types conveniently located at the top of the DeskConnect interface. The DeskConnect iOS app is specifically set up to allow you to quickly send photos, websites, clipboard contents, and iCloud Drive documents. You can even send the contents of your clipboard directly to a destination of your choice. You can send text files, photos, small videos, Safari links, and more. You can share all sorts of things with DeskConnect. Although there’s no Quick Action shortcuts available on the Home screen app icon, you can use 3D Touch to peek and pop at the shared contents found inside of the DeskConnect app. This includes banners and Lock screen notifications as well.ģD Touch makes a brief appearance with the 1.2 update. When you receive a new shared item on your iOS device, you can quickly copy items to the clipboard directly from Notification Center. ![]() You’ll need to be logged in to your free DeskConnect account on each device in order to use sharing.ĭeskConnect 1.2 also brings notification actions to the mix, making it quicker to act on received files. Destinations can include the Mac (with the help of a companion app), another iPhone, or an iPad. Once the app’s share extension is selected, you’ll see all of the destinations that have DeskConnect installed. For example, if I’m in the Twitter app, I can share tweets with other devices using the DeskConnect share extension. The main new feature in DeckConnect’s 1.2 update is the share extension that lets you quickly share items from other apps. With this in mind, it’s obvious that you wouldn’t want to transfer anything that’s overly sensitive. Unlike AirDrop, where files are transferred locally, files are transmitted via the Internet to DeskConnect’s servers for temporary storage and retrieval. After 30 days, files are permanently deleted. DeskConnect temporarily stores files on its servers in order to transfer items between devices. It is not a long term storage place for your files. What it’s notįirst of all, let me briefly touch on what DeskConnect is not. In 2016, where does a new version of DeskConnect fit in? Does AirDrop make it redundant? Have a look at our overview for the details. Since then, a lot has changed - iOS has gained inter-app communication via handy share extensions, iCloud Drive has made it easier to move and manipulate files across a variety of storage solutions, and AirDrop can now easily transfer files between iOS devices and Macs. We reviewed the initial version of DeskConnect back in 2013. DeskConnect isn’t an app that will replace a service like Dropbox or even iCloud, because it was designed solely with file transfers in mind. It allows you to easily share files between your iPhone, iPad and Mac. In fl the ship fails to kill even a single Q in a timely fashion. it could single-handedly clear a xenon sector in tc and when you can do that the ship could also deal with everything else up to khaak capital ships in lower dosages. Yes, you could argue just take a m7 or even bigger ship but even the agamemnon sucks now. In fl i found that hept didn't do nearly as much damage anymore and cig's aren't that much better either but they have the range advantage so there's that. so it's not that you're invincible that would be using the spring blossom with M/AM launchers. and in numbers the xenon capital ships still pose a threat to the hyperion. Yea it's op when the hyperion can do this but it's fun and enjoyable. by that point you have about half it's shields depleted just rinse and repeat and after 3 goes at it the Q should be done. when you're out you speed off a little and let it regenerate. you just fly up to it head on and dodge incoming fire while you unload your whole laser energy into the Q. In tc the hyperion vanguard can take out a Q with 12 high energy plasma throwers. ![]() There is nothing better a m6 could arm other than plasma bursts but then you'll get wrecked by flak spam. I don't see how it's fun to wail forever on ships even with concussion impulse generators. this is mainly the case because of the laser and hull value changes to ships which they did for ap at some point and these are changes that fl did get inherent as the game is based on ap. I find myself favoring tc above ap and fl. i tried fl but dropped it for now because of the disliked dynamic reputation system and its getting very grindy as well with the reverse engineering and acquiring station blueprints. |
